Review-Servanthood as Worship by Nate Palmer

Nate Palmer begins Servanthood as Worship with his confession of how his view of servanthood became skewed early in his Christian walk. As Palmer explains, “What started out as a way to express my joy soon became, in my mind, a way to manage God.” Palmer goes on to describe how he began to see serving as a way to gain status, to be recognized as a leader, to be recognized by the church leadership. How many of us can relate to this servant rollercoaster Palmer describes in his opening chapter?

From there Palmer offers us a clearer focus on what true servant hood looks like. He begins this by demonstrating that as Christians, our lineage traces directly back to Jesus Christ. Palmer writes, "My spiritual family tree—just like yours—is filled with people who responded to the gospel by modeling Christ’s love and service to others." he goes on to conclude, "All our service for God begins and ends with service from God." He proceeds to demonstrate in chapter three how the local church is our base for service and in chapter four discussing God’s character and works. Palmer concludes with his final five chapters by systematically addressing “biblically grounded attitudes”: toward service that we should all be striving for. These attitudes are; appreciation, adoration, affection, subjection, and perspective.

As I read Servanthood as Worship, I contemplated who Palmer’s intended audience for this book is. After reading it the answer is obvious; all of us. There is definitely something for us all in this book, some may be encouraged, some exhorted, some may even come away rebuked, or if you are like me, you come away from Servanthood as Worship being encouraged, exhorted, and rebuked. A must read.

Book Review-The American Patriot’s Almanac, by William J. Bennett and John T.E. Cribb

The American Patriot’s Almanac is daily reader that gives you a short dated history lesson about the United states every day. It begins on January 1 and takes you all the way through December 31 with a relevant historical story for each day of the year.

In addition to the daily readings, the authors have included many other things to help one learn more about our country. Included are sections such as “Flag Etiquette: Guidelines for Displaying and Handling the U.S. Flag, The Declaration of Independence, How the Constitution Was Written and Ratified, Songs of American Patriotism, The Gettysburg Address, and many more.

The American Patriot’s Almanac would be a great resource for any home library, but I am finding it a must have for any homeschooled family. This book provides a mini history lesson that is easy for all ages to follow and can be read and discussed in about 15 minutes. Perhaps one of my favorite features is the “American History Parade” that is found at the end of each days reading. The “American History Parade” is a list of things that happened on that particular day throughout the history of the United states.

Review–The Gospel According to Jesus: A Faith that Restores All Things by Chris Seay

The Gospel According to Jesus: A Faith that Restores All Things by Chris Seay is an attempt at communicating the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. Seay uses his own translation of the Bible throughout the book drawing on his life experiences in the Church. Seay openly shares his church background as an explanation for where he is spiritually coming from.

I did not like this book at all. One of the first things that bothered me was the biblical translation used. It Seay’s own translation that goes as far as adding his own clarifiers in the middle of passages. Not only do I find that unnecessary, but I believe it begins to get dangerously close to “adding to Scripture”. Seay does get it that salvation is a free gift that can not be earned, however there is no real explanation as to why we need that free gift. It is almost presented as something similar to getting a free toaster for opening a bank account. Salvation is not cheap, it came with a price. It cost the Son of God his life and why? Because I am a sinner, because we all sinners and God’s justice demands that their be punishment for that sin. That is what the Gospel is about, Jesus paying a debt that he did not owe so that I may live. What Seay’s message came down to was exchanging the “do nots” that he was taught growing up with a list of “do’s”. You do that list all you want, that is great. I sure there are those that will appreciate it but that is not the Gospel of Jesus.

Pick up the classic John MacArthur The Gospel According to Jesus: What is authentic Faith? or Greg Gilbert’s What is the Gospel? but leave this one on the shelf.

Review–The Grace of God by Andy Stanley

The Grace of God by Andy Stanley is the story of grace. It is a story that begins in Genesis and travels through the Old Testament and into New Testament and the first century church. Stanley takes a look at many aspects of grace in his book; from being chosen by grace, to redeemed by grace, rescued by grace, accepted, reborn and saved among several others.

It is safe to say that Stanley gave grace a thorough treatment. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is evident as Stanley writes about grace. As a Christian I found the book to be edifying, it is good to be reminded of God’s grace on a continual basis. Too many times we make the mistake of having the mind set that the Gospel is only for the unsaved, those that have not accepted Christ as their Savior. That is sad, because even the saved need to be reminded that we are all sinners and Christ is our only hope. Reminded that the free gift of God’s grace is the only thing between me and an eternity in hell. A reminder that grace is undeserved, yet freely given to those that believe. The book is also presented in a way that it is understandable, Stanley did not over complicate the message of grace. It is presented in a way that would make it easy to have a conversation with an unbeliever who may read The Grace of God.

Review- Out Live Your Life by Max Lucado

Lucado’s Out Live Your Life is an exhortation challenging Christians to step up, step out of their comfort zone, and stare into the face of the needy world that we live in. Lucado uses the start of the early church and the book of Acts to demonstrate the attitude Christians should have towards a world with many needs. Whether it is hunger, friendship, mentoring, or poverty Lucado offers an exhortation.

I found Out Live Your life to be convicting. I found myself asking how often do I look away from the needs of someone God has placed in my path. Not just those that I consider friends or family, but also those that are not as fortunate as maybe I have been, the perfect stranger that is in need. I also had to ask, who have I given up on and quit proclaiming the Gospel to them because they must be a “lost cause”?

I would have liked to see the proclamation of the Gospel more a part of the process of “Out living your life”. I had the sense that there was the expectation that the Gospel may be seen through the actions being taken. In addition, this is not to say that, that is the message Lucado was communicating, just that I believe it could have been more specifically communicated that the proclamation of the Gospel is the opportunity we are looking for in all we do

Review of #Well Driven Nails by @Byron Yawn

Before getting into my review of “Well Driven Nails” by Byron Yawn, I feel that I must point out a couple of details. First, I am reviewing the book of my pastor and I am glad to have the opportunity. Secondly, I review the book having witnessed the difference that this project has made on Byron Yawn as a man, as a pastor, and as an expositor, that preaches the Word of God every week. I would also like to note that this review is being written from a layman’s perspective which is important to note because “Well Driven Nails” is a work aimed at encouraging and exhorting pastors… preachers of the Word. So, why should anyone other than a pastor read “Well Driven Nails”? Well, for starters this reader/reviewer was encouraged and exhorted as a layman. The book also provided wonderful insight into the spiritual life of my pastor, as well as the men he writes about.

Well Driven Nails is the result of Byron Yawn’s D. Min. degree that focused on expository preaching. The idea for the book came from his desire to pinpoint what was missing in his preaching and address the issue head on. Byron proceeded to “pick” the brains of the expositors that he admires most to discover what they found was missing in their delivery. His criteria in selecting the interviewees were clarity, depth, and passion. The result is three great conversations with what the modern evangelical world considers giants of reformed theology, they also happen to enjoy pastorates that span decades for each: more than 100 years of pastoral and expository preaching experience between them. We hear from John MacArthur on clarity, R.C. Sproul on depth, and John Piper on passion. These men share what it is to empty their self as a pastor for the sake of the Gospel. It is not academics, it is life, and it is life and death. It would be impossible for me to relay through this review the depth of wisdom that these three men share in Well Driven Nails. I cannot even begin to express the impact that this project has obviously had on my pastor.

As a layman I recommend Well Driven Nails, first, to any pastor that is in that rut and is tired of going from one “church in a box” program to another. Your congregants will not be affected for Christ when, you, their minister, is living in that box. The time has come to preach the Word with clarity, with depth, with passion to be real for and with your congregation. For the layman, this book will help you to better understand the trials pastor’s experience that is difficult for them to talk about. It is important to take to heart the truths of Well-Driven Nails that will transform your approach to “expository listening”. The Word of God is a connection to the Christian life and pastors pour their own life out for the sake of the Gospel. We all need to thank God for the messages our solid ministers preach by showing them our appreciation by living a transformed life. For my fellow congregants at Community Bible Church, read the book not because Byron wrote it, but because he poured his heart and love for Christ and you into it.

Book Review: “Green” by Ted Dekker

Green is book zero in Ted Dekker’s “The Circle” series, Green actually being the fourth installment of the series. The idea is that a reader should be able to pick up the series at any point, and follow through all four books, thus the title of the series”The Circle”. I found green to interesting, and as I got into it, I discovered some familiarity although I have not read any of the other three books from the series. Dekker has cleverly tied this series in with another series of his, the Paradise novels. I had read the book “Showdown” from that series a few years ago. As I said I did find Green to be interesting as a story and the series interesting from a conceptual standpoint. However, whether it was unfamiliarity with the other titles or not understanding the whole of how all these titles intertwine, or a combination of all of the above I found it difficult at times to keep up and understand. I constantly felt I was missing something that would not be found within the pages I was reading, yet not curious enough to sort it out by going through the other titles that are related to Green. Maybe if I had started at a true beginning point it would have been different.

Trying a Fiction Review Green by Ted Dekker

Be looking for this in the next few days. I have just started this one and definitely curious. I am familiar with Dekker’s work and have honestly struggled with it at times. Dekker walks a fine line, taking the reader to the edge many times during a story. Where his work falls apart for me is normally in the spiritual analogies he is trying to communicate. Perhaps more on that in the review. Regardless it should be a fun read.

I have just begun reading Deep Church: A Third Way Beyond Emerging and Traditional by Jim Belcher. The idea Belcher has is very interesting, his intent is to bring the traditional conservative church together with the more liberal, seeker sensitive emerging church together. I generally get a feel for an authors view point by checking the books endorsements, however with endorsements from such varying authors it may be difficult to gage exactly where Belcher is going to land. Endorsing the book are Tim Keller (The Reason for God and The Prodigal God, both receiving favorable reviews from http://www.challies.com/) to Mark Driscoll, Mars Hill Church, Seattle (has been known to stir a pot or two himself) to Rob Bell, Mars Hill Church, Grand Rapids. (definitely falling into that emerging category)

From Peanuts was a fun read, even for an Auburn fan. Eli Gold meticulously recalls his days in high school when he realized what he wanted to do to his present position as the voice of the Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama. We have all heard stories of those that have had to pay their dues in life to get where they are, and Eli Gold is no exception. You get a to see his passion and dedication early in his career when he worked for nothing just to gain experience.

And speaking of experience, Eli Gold has it. From calling play by play for hockey, to baseball, to basketball, to football and even NASCAR. From high school to college, to minor leagues, and the pros. With this experience comes great stories from all these sports. Stories of that have occurred both on and off the playing field. Stories that show both the fun and serious side of sports, from practical jokes that are played to the bloopers we have all seen on TV, to stories of some the heart warming things that athletes do behind the scenes, and sadly stories of the losses that the sports world has endured.

From start to finish this was a great read, pulled together very well by author M.B. Roberts. You crisscross back and forth through time with Eli as shares his experiences one endeavor at a time.

Undefiled is a book that comes from years of Schaumburg’s counseling experience primarily dealing with couples that find themselves faced with some sort of sexual sin. Sexual sin ranging from the viewing of pornography to emotional and/or physical affairs. The gist of Undefiled is that there is hope in these situations, all is not lost. Schaumburg’s experience in dealing with these matters is crystal clear in his writing.

I found Undefiled to be very relevant to not just the society in which we live in today, but also to the state of the Church today. I found Schaumburg’s counsel to be biblically responsible, not a lot of make yourself feel good about your sin psycho-babble that the industry has become accustomed to pumping out for our consumption. While Undefiled is primarily directed at those dealing with major sexual sin in their marriage, I believe any married man or woman would be challenged in reading Undefiled. I found the book to be a refreshing change from the popular stance that says when infidelity is involved in marriage, that all hope is lost and divorce is the only option left available. Schaumburg does an excellent job of reminding us that sexual sin is just that, sin. Not an addiction, nor an excuse for continued bad behavior. Schaumburg reminds us what it means to be a man, what it means to be a woman, and what it means to be married. How we should be married, and most importantly why we are married.

I would definitely recommend Undefiled to any married couple, but specifically those faced with the delicate issues that prompted Schaumburg to write this book. For Schaumburg this isn’t just another book to write, it is a ministry, a ministry that he is obviously passionate about and carries on to the glory of God.

In reading “Undefiled: Redemption From Sexual Sin, Restoration for Broken Relationships” by Harry Schaumburg I ran across this tidbit that I found to be very interesting. In chapter 2; Restoring the Darkness, Schaumburg cites a study that was conducted by a British anthropologist. This is what it said, “……J.D. Unwin studied eighty-six cultures spanning five thousand years of human history and found that, without exception, cultures that thrive when they restrict sex to marriage. He also found that no culture (emphasis mine) survived more than three generations after disregarding that standard.” (Harry W. Schaumburg, Undefiled: Redemption From Sexual Sin, Restoration for Broken Relationships (Chicago, IL Moody Publishers) pg. 27)

If there was ever a time to pray for morality and integrity it is now. I believe at best we are in generation number 2, possibly have begun #3. All one has to do is take a look at the headlines to see that we are on a very slippery slope.

This Momentary Marriage is a book obviously about marriage, however marriage takes second place to what the book is truly about. This work by piper is more about the covenant we enjoy with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as his bride first and the relationship between husband and wife second. The correlation between Christ and the church and husband and wife could not be made more clear.

Piper’s book on marriage has been 40 years in the making. The personal nature of his words are evidenced throughout each chapter. Not only has the book provided deep spiritual insights into my walk with Christ, but has provided plenty to consider in regards to my relationship with my wife. It has never been more obviously shown how the two are connected. Piper more than sufficiently backs each position expositionally from Scripture. He does tend to take the hard stance that you have come to expect from him on some issues. Some of which I am sure would be debated among conservative evangelicals. However, I would not find these issues to be necessarily divisive. Included in the book is also a brief study of how those that are single properly fit among those that are married within the church, making this a recommend reading for all; married or single.

She Still Calls Me Daddy by Robert Wolgemuth

She Still Calls Me Daddy is a book to help fathers adjust to “giving their daughter away” to another man when they are married. Wolgemuth uses an analogy of home renovation throughout the book to get his counsel across to fathers that find themselves in this stage of life.
As a father of two daughters (not yet near the age of marriage) I appreciate the counsel offered by Wolgemuth. His practical approach to this time of life for a man I believe would prove very beneficial to his long term relationship with his daughter and new son-in-law. This counsel it seems would also be beneficial for our relationships with our son after marriage and for mothers after sons and daughters marry. Wolgemuth does lightly pepper his counsel with appropriate biblical reference throughout the book.
I would recommend this title to any parent that has children that are about to marry or have actually already married and are struggling with the relationship with their son or daughter in-law. The book may even prove to provide counsel for the couple that feels their parental relationships are suffering after marriage due to unwanted meddling.

Allon is not yet available through public release. It can be purchased directly from the author until its planned January release. Though I have not gotten beyond chapter 1, it has already proven interesting. If you or your family enjoy stories such as Lord of the Rings, I am already thinking you will be in for a treat with this piece of work. I am looking forward to writing more on it later in next week after I have completed it.

I am starting this Blog mainly to share my studies from the Word of God, and to post reviews for the books I am reading. Some of these books will be those that interest me specifically, some will be for a program I am participating in with Thomas Nelson Publishing. Reviews will be of varying genres, from Biblical studies, to historical and biographical, to spiritual, and even fictional at times.

I am not sure who will be interested, or how many will follow this blog, for those that do, thank you for your time. I welcome your comments, and will look forward to the possibilities of dialogue on the various topics that come up.
